So we have the new Ubuntu version available for download and i am pretty sure you are all set and ready to tweak your Ubuntu 12.10 system as usual. As we all know that even after a fresh Ubuntu install, we need to customize and tweak the operating system with latest updates, audio and video codecs, apps etc.
The new version is free to use as usual but has also been tweaked with certain new features like the online search, amazon search, dash preview, excellent booting time, new wallpapers etc.
I assume you are done installing the new Ubuntu 12.10 on your system, if you are dual booting it with Windows then you might like to read [How To] dual boot Linux Ubuntu 12.10 with Windows 7.
Now lets proceed with the qualitative things you should do immediately after you install Ubuntu 12.10. If you are still using Ubuntu 12.04, you can also see things to do after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Check For Updates
or on the Dash search for "Software Updater" and check for updates if available.
Install GNOME Tweak Tool
Install Dropbox
Install Ubuntu Unity
Install GIMP 2.8.2
Install File Compression/Decompression Utility
Install Synaptic Package Manager
Install Wine
Enable Hibernation Mode
Open the terminal and run the code below
sudo gedit /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/hibernate.pkla
save and restart to check.
Disable Online Search in Dash
Install and enable XScreensaver
and copy and paste the following code in the file
Install Ubuntu One Indicator
Install Notifications Indicator
Install Adobe Flash Plugin
Open the terminal and run the following commands
Install JAVA
Install Download Manager (Multi Get) for Ubuntu 12.04
Install Email Client Thunderbird
Install Instant Messaging Client (Empathy)
Install Adobe Reader

Install Media Codecs
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Install Additional Drivers
Now you won't find Additional Drivers option in the dash. Since the new version you will get the additional drivers option integrated with the software sources. Open the dash and search for "Software Sources" and head towards the last button that says "Additional Drivers" and this will show you all the driver's which are required to be installed.

Install Synaptic Package Manager
sudo apt-get install synaptic
Install VLC Media Player
sudo apt-get install vlc
Install Ubuntu Tweak
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
Install Compiz Config Settings Manager
Install GNOME Tweak Tool
Install Dropbox
sudo apt-get install nautilus-dropbox
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:myunity/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install myunity
sudo apt-get install gimp
sudo apt-get install p7zip-full p7zip-rar
sudo apt-get install synaptic
sudo apt-get install wine
now copy and paste the following code into the file
Re-enable Hibernate]

Go to Dash and search for Privacy and turn off online search option
or
run the following command as an alternative
sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
Install Xscreensaver by running the following command
sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-data-extra
now enter the following code in the terminal to create a auto start entry
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/autostart/screensaver.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Screensaver
Type=Applicaton
Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/initialtesting
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-ubuntuone
