Things to do After Installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is in its Final Beta and very soon its going to release Long Term Support Version. Ubuntu is one of the most famous and heavily used operating systems worldwide. After you are done installing Ubuntu 12.04 there are quite a few things that you have to do in order to make the most out of your Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system. You need to tweak it with softwares, codec, repositories, upgrades, updates and many more. Let us see some of the essential things that you have to do just after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

1) Check for Update

sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get upgrade

2) Install Important Restricted Codecs

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

3) Install Ubuntu Tweak

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

4) Install Synaptic

sudo apt-get install synaptic

5) Install VLC Media Player

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer

6) Install JAVA

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-plugin

7) Install Adobe Flash Player Plugin

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

8) Install Play On Linux

Its is a graphical user interface which simplifies the installation of Windows based applications and games on Linux Ubuntu.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.3
wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_precise.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux


9) Install Opera Web Browser



sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list'

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install opera



10) Install Chromium Web Browser

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser chromium-browser-l10n


11) Also You can Install Google Chrome

sudo apt-get install google-chrome-beta


12) Install Download Manager (Multi Get) for Ubuntu 12.04

sudo apt-get install multiget


13) Email Client : Thunderbird


sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install thunderbird


14) Install Instant Messaging Client (Empathy)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:telepathy/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install empathy

15) Install Instant Messaging Client (Pidgin)
      Add a Launchpad Repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pidgin-developers/ppa && sudo apt-get update


     Install Pidgin


sudo apt-get install pidgin pidgin-data pidgin-lastfm pidgin-guifications msn-pecan pidgin-musictracker pidgin-plugin-pack pidgin-themes


14) Install Adobe Reader

sudo apt-get install acroread


15) Install Filezilla

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/programs-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install filezilla filezilla-common

16) Install GNOME Sushi

sudo apt-get install synaptic


17) Install GIMP (Paint Studio)

sudo apt-get install gimp
